There is no sane or good reason to continue the pollution associated with and resulting from the operation of Salem Harbor Power Plant. In addition it is a dreadful eyesore. Sadly, Salem has been associated with some tragic decisions regarding people in the surrounding area for over four hundred years. Let's Give Salem at last a clean start. Let's begin by permanently closing the Dominion Salem Harbor Power Plant.
I'm 100% behind closure of the planet!
Dominion had revenue of 16 BILLION DOLLARS!!! last year with a profit of $2.5 BILLION!!!! but yet the taxes they pay have gone DOWN from $9 million to $4.5 million since 1997 but the homeowners of Salem have had taxes go up 90%!!?????? How and why is this fair?? We the people of Salem should decide what should go on that land and as one RESIDENT stated, COAL OR STROLL?? I SAY STROLL!!! LET'S MAKE IT A PLACE FOR THE CITIZENS TO USE AND ENJOY RATHER THAN A TOXIC POWER PLANT AS HAS BEEN FOR THE PAST 56 YEARS!!
Salem is a great city and the plant is taking away from a brighter future. It's time to close!
Did you notice the plant when you bought your house? It's sure nice of all you Marbleheaders to tell us what's good for Salem. If you don't like it...MOVE!
I have a seven year old girl and we live in Salem. It horrifies me to know what this plant dumps into our air on a daily basis. I want my daughter to grow up healthy. Let me know what I can do to help.
As a resident of Marblehead and a registered voter in Massachusetts I want that killing power plant shut down now.
As a resident of Marblehead and a registered voter in Massachusetts I want that killing power plant shut down now.
This is a no-brainer. Close the plant and let's start working on our great new future. The time has come to act. Search your conscience. We don't want to look back and say we could have changed this - and did nothing.
Manifest Destiny - enough is enough!!!! The antiquated facility must be closed for the sake of our health as well as the next generation.
I am troubled by the unusually high cancer rates on the North Shore. I am also troubled by the smell the plant produces. Send the plant back to Virginia with its owners.

revolution begins at home .Our planet is home our activism counts . I will be making flyers to get Beverly business owners involved.
We live in Beverly across the harbor from the power plant. We have always had black coal dust covering our porch furniture and settling on the window sills. Thank you for taking on this cause. We are happy to add our names to the petition.
there should be no question about the Salem power plant - it is filthy, covering the surrounding area with coal dust and who-knows-what-else. This can not be healthy and should not be allowed to continued. The old arguments no longer hold and Salem needs to give up the "property tax" argument and recognize that this pollution can no longer continue --- as they export their property tax burden to customers as part of the electric rate.
I suspect that the energy produced by this plant is superfluous and would like to see Dominion substantiate its claim that the plant is needed.
I want to see the Salem Coal Plant shut down for good. My Uncle lived across the harbor from the plant for more than 30 years. He died last year from lung cancer and never smoked a day in his life. I'll do whatever I can to help this effort.
The vision of Salem Green Harbor looks awesome!
As a worker in Salem, I am extremely concerned about the health risks associated with the Salem Power Plant. I advocate that the plant be closed and resources be directed to the development of green fuel sources on this site.
CLOSE THE SALEM HARBOR POWER PLANT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Enough is enough!
56 years is enough. Close the plant.
We can do better!
There's black dirt on my window sills. What do my lungs look like? How can a plant be "grandfathered" to allow them to kill people? Maybe it should be called "deadgrandfathered"?
Please shut down the power plant in Salem. It's old, unsafe, outdated, and toxic to the residents of Salem. Beyond that, we should think about the affect on the environment. Wind or solar power should be what we move forward with.
"The Power Plant" Has always been a major eyesore and polluter in an otherwise beautiful area
PLEASE shut the plant. Let me know what I can do. We live directly across from it and would love to see it go!
Close the Plant now!
Beyond the environmental degradation created in Salem is the vast devastation created by MOUNTAINTOP REMOVAL. This is a prime opportunity to stop DIRTY COAL, improve the Massachusetts environment, and reduce what Big Coal is doing to our lands. I support your efforts and hope you will oppose DIRTY COAL where ever it exists. Dirty Coal's Dirty Salem Plant http://middlebororeview.blogspot.com/2008/07/dirty-coals-dirty-salem-plant.html
Thanks for working so hard, but what would the power generated by the plant be replaced with? Solar, wind, and ocean currents, I hope! -:)
Governor Patrick, please don't let us down. Salem and the nation deserve better. Join us in our vision for a world-class North Shore. Help close this abomination and stand with us.
We want this plant closed ASAP!
My father was a coal miner and from start to finish there is nothing CLEAN about coal.
Let's get this awful plant closed! We can lead the way to a Green Massachusetts...
We operated fine for six months without the plant during the OSHA investigation of the November explosion and alternative sources of power are readily available.
I have lived in Salem all my life and I am tired of watching all the family die from cancer. Please close this plant now.
I have read the information and am convinced that this plant should not reopen. As a family, we have focused on reducing our household energy consumption this summer and we have foregone taking a vacation to do so. Each of us has taken part in addressing seasonal issues to reduce summer solar gain and winter heat loss. We increased attic insulation, added weather-stripping, changed the light bulbs, insulated drapes, purchased 2 new energy efficient appliances and paid the premium to buy the most energy efficient available. We'll have solar hot water by the Fall. We're willing to take whatever steps are necessary to reduce coal burning and environmental contamination in this country. This has really struck a chord with us. We hope others are as well.
Get rid of that ugly, polluting, awful power plant, ASAP!!!
The power plant has a major negative social impact on the surrounding towns and a new vision and development of the site could bring much more to the entire region, not just Salem.
I support closure of the Salem Harbor Power Plan.
As a Salem resident, civil engineer, and mother of a toddler, I have joined in supporting the closing of this plant. To sugarcoat the egregious dangers that this plant subjects our children to is insulting. The only reason that I see to keep this plant open is purely as a profit engine for Dominion whose benefactors I would guess would not even want to live near this site.
let me know how I can assist!
